At one end sit heritage luxury houses charging 300 to 500 dollars for a single winder, and well past 1,000 for multi watch cabinets. Luxury winders are not a scam. When you pay several hundred dollars for a single unit, part of that money buys real engineering:

• Accurate rotation programmes. The best units count rotations rather than running on a crude timer, so the turns per day setting you choose is the setting your watch actually receives.
• Quiet motors. A winder often lives in a bedroom or an office. High end motors are engineered to be heard only when you put your ear next to the case.
• Materials and finishing. Stitched leather, lacquered wood, glass doors. These are display objects as much as instruments.
• Long warranties. Multi year coverage is standard at the top of the market.

The rest of the price buys the name on the lid. That is a legitimate thing to pay for if heritage matters to you. It does nothing extra for your watch. The rotor inside your automatic cannot read a logo; it only feels rotations, direction and rest periods.

5. An honest warranty and return window. A company that will not take the unit back does not believe in it. Thirty days should be the floor.

Fair warning on the budget tier: some cheap winders are genuinely fine for a beater watch. The problem is that you cannot tell which ones from the listing, and the cost of guessing wrong is a unit in a drawer and a watch that still stops.
